MEMORIES

We read the book, Wilfred Gordon MacDonald Partridge By Mem Fox, one of my favourites.
I asked the class to think about memories. They created a poster about their memories from Junior School or Memories of Year Six.

I really look forward to reading and sharing the memories.

Here they are creating...

I allowed the students free access to all the art supplies...GLITTER was very popular.

LAST MINUTE PREPARATIONS BEFORE THE DEBATE

The ministers and shadow ministers were busy planning and discussing the issues they were going to discuss in the Parliamentary Debate.

Our Parliamentary Debate

How does Democracy work for us Aussies?

That was the question that was asked.

The culmination was our Parliamentary Debate hosted by our local member for Parliament Craig Kelly.

The Bill that was proposed was that students need better conditions for learning.

Our Minister for Education spoke first followed by the shadow Mimister for Education.

Craig Kelly demonstrated how it was meant to be done.

We enjoyed our debate.  Please enjoy some of the videos of the students debating as well as Craig.

He sure is excellent.

Maths PBL completed.

The students were asked a Question...

There are no Maths games on the market that teach students about Fractions in a fun and engaging way. Can you create a game?

The students worked for 3 periods and here they are playing the games that they created with the other Year 6 class.

Prior to the creation of the game, the students had spent some time learning all about fractions - equivalent, simplifying, improper fractions, adding and subtracting fractions. They were ready to go...

We reviewed the question after the games were played...the reactions were very interesting.

Bridge Construction in Action.

Please enjoy the action of Year Six as they create, collaborate and explore...

Creating Bridges

Today we created bridges out of straws and masking tape. The students worked either individually or in pairs to write questions, plan and create a bridge that would hold a suitable load.
We started the tests and will complete them tomorrow.
Here are some photos of the students working.

PBL in Mathematics

My students were given a real life problem to solve.
There are no suitable board games for Year Six to play that help them with their understanding of Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. You will need to create one.

The students set to work on planning their game and needed to run it by me to see if I thought it was a suitable idea.

Here are some students working on their plans.

Completed Bridges using Connex

Here are the finished examples of the bridges that were constructed by the students. They are now very excited about the actual bridge building day this week.

The students have been discussing the types of bridges they will build. The language and reasoning has been a pleasure to be eaves dropping on...

A cantilever bridge.

A suspension bridge.

A beam or a box girder.

A truss bridge.

Still under construction - a truss/suspension.

Assessment-How does a Bill become a Law?

Students viewed the PEO website to investigate how a bill becomes a law. After this investigation, the students prepared a short talk to present to a number of friends about their findings. The talk was videoed and then uploaded to you tube and sent to me so that I could assess the students' understanding. Here are the students in action.

Now I need to view the videos to learn about making laws in Australian Government.

Study of the bridges in our local area

We have started to investigate specific bridges. The students were allowed choice as to which bridge to study and how to present it. Such differentiation...The students loved the idea. Working collaboratively...another PLUS.

Here are some of the presentations.
