Examples of student writing

Here are some examples of the students' writing from  yesterday.

I certainly enjoyed reading the pieces of writing.

Uninterrupted Writing.

Today we had a visiting author, Jacqueline Harvey. She was a fantastic storyteller as well as an inspiration. I asked the students to write for 20 minutes as there was 20 minutes until recess.

What was the topic? The day Mrs Davis made me write for twenty minutes.

There was silence for 20 minutes.

It was awesome.

I am really looking forward to reading what the students have written.

I suspect they will write about the fact that Mrs. Davis MADE them write, or that they would rather be out eating and playing and can't wait until recess. After all don't all students come to school for recess, lunch and to see their friends? I hope there are some funny responses...

Stay tuned. I will write about their responses...

Artworks Inspired by John Coburn

Over the past semester a group of Year Six students has been working with a specialist Art teacher as part of our Transition Program. These are some of the collages that have been created after being inspired by the Australian artist John Coburn.

Please note the intricacy of some of the collages.

Creating Models of our Scopes

The unit of study this term in Science and Technology was LIGHT.
Our study was divided into two sections.
Firstly, the science investigations were carried out in the Secondary School led by our specialist Science teacher.
Secondly, the technology investigations were completed in the Year Six classroom.

The investigation was about a 'scope'.

Each pair of students chose a 'scope' to investigate. They posed questions, wrote hypotheses, collected data and then explained about their 'scope' of investigation. The fun was to finally make the scope or a model of the scope.

Next week we will talk about each of the models and explain how they work.

Here are some of the students creating their models.

You can see how engaged the students were...
This group love to work collaboratively.

What we made

My colleges and I had to show each other how to make something. We started by making static electricity with foam, cloth, aluminium and foam cups. Then we learnt how to draw a dog on grid paper. Next we learnt how to make a brownie mixture that might come in handy in a birthday party. First we mixed butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract. Then we added 4 eggs and mixed. We mixed coco powder, flour and baking powder and the mix was complete.

Making Play-Doh and other things.

Yesterday we had to do a talking and listening assignment. We had to teach 3 other students how to do or make something. One student taught us how to make play-doh. When he taught us how to make it, he did it perfectly. Then he gave the other 3 students the same ingredients but theirs turned out sticky and gooey and it stuck to their hands. I don't think we will make play-doh at school again.

Another person made a lava lamp, it was very fizzy and colourful. We had a lot of fun while watching the science experiment happen. The coloured water and vegetable oil, mixed together forming an amazing looking lamp! After the oil and water mixed, they took a minute to settle before you could re- use it.

A different student had taught the group how to bulid and fold a paper glider that will help get paper airplanes to fly even higher than they can fly on itself. This paper glider was named the improved traditional.

One of the people made a stunt plane. The plane was called the "stunt squirrel" because it did stunts and was really fast. It glided through the air well. We also combined two planes to make it fly higher and further. It flew really well.

We all had a great time.

Our 15 minute DIY projects!

Doing our project was really fun! We made all kinds of things like tissue paper pom poms and corner bookmarks. The first thing we made were tissue paper pom poms. We really enjoyed learning how to make them and hanging them from the umbrella in the classroom. The second thing we made were fluffy pom pom duck/owls it was so fun to glue everything on and see what everyone's looked like. The third thing we made were beautiful corner bookmarks they were so pretty and very easy to make. The forth thing that we made were chocolate snowballs they were really yummy and fun to make. We all enjoyed making them and eating them at the end. The fifth thing we made were paper cranes. It was really fun to learn to fold them and to see them all finished. We really had fun doing our project and showing people how to make different things and making them ourselves.

Yesterday's activities

Yesterday our group participated in activities where we had to teach people how to create an item of choice in under 15 minutes. The first student taught our group how to make pom-poms using the materials of wool, cardboard and scissors. We were so caught up we went a little bit over time.
The next thing we created were origami bunnies. It was a little hard but we ended up pulling thorough and made our origami bunnies, although some didn't  turn out too well.
Thirdly we made pigs out of towels. It was a team effort because we needed two people on one towel. Afterward we dressed up our pigs and took some fabulous photos of our towel pigs. Our group really enjoyed all the activities that we participated in yesterday!
One of our members even made muffins. Yum!

The Best 2 Hours Of Our Life

Yesterday a group of 5 girls in 6D had 15 minutes each to teach the group something of their choice, here are some pictures to help you get a picture of what fun we had yesterday.... Everyone had a fantastic time showing fellow group members just how talented they are!! It was amazing what people chose to show and finish in so little time. Some students chose to do some craft like spiders and some chose to do food like brownies of chocolate balls. Over all every one had lots do fun and some people even donated things to the school library!

Experiments on Thursday

One student showed us how to make a crossbow made out of pencils and pens. Another student showed us how to blow up our lunches. No students were injured. Then a student showed us how to make dog faces out of paper. Then we learnt how to use a Samsung galaxy s4 and a Samsung watch.
